Content: Theletter has great content on the Presbyterian Church in North Carolina and inTennessee, the Temperance movement in the south, and the education of ministersfor the church. The author mentions the“scismaticks”, or “Locinians”, the “Cambellites”, and Mr. Pressly (Rev. John Taylor Pressly). Someof the topics discussed are, Lincoln County (Tennessee), CumberlandPresbyterians and Methodists, Associate Reformed Church in Tennessee, and theWestern Synod.

History:

Rev. Isaac Grier (1776-1843) was a Presbyterian minister mostlyassociated with North Carolina and Georgia. He was a graduate of DickinsonCollege in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1800.

Rev. William Ramsey Hemphill (1806-1876) was a Presbyterianminister and merchant in Providence, North Carolina. Hemphill was born inHopewell, South Carolina to Rev. JohnHemphill (1761 - 1832) and Jane Lind Hemphill (1767 - 1809), and was thebrother of Rev. John Hemphill (1803-1862) who was an early pioneer, judge andU.S. Senator from Texas. William was agraduate of Jefferson College (1833) and after graduation he entered theSeminary at Allegany under the presidency of Dr. John T. Pressly. Hemphill wasordained and installed by the Second Presbytery pastor of Cedar Springs andLong Cane, Abbeville County, South Carolina (1837); and was elected by Synod tothe Chair of Latin in Erskine College. After the Civil War he moved to NewHope, Madison Co., Kentucky before moving back to Due West, Abbeville, SouthCarolina where he died in 1876. William was married to Hannah Smith Lind, thedaughter of the Rev. John Lind who was a long time pastor in A. R. Church atGreencastle, Pennsylvania.

Hemphill’s Store was located on McAlpine’s Creek, inProvidence Beat, 11 miles south of Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina. The post office appears to have beenexistence from 1826 to 1858.

John Taylor Pressly (1795-1870) was a prominent Presbyterianminister in the American south.
