THE GEORGE CROSS

The George Cross(GC)is second in the order of wear in theUnited Kingdom honours system, and takes precedence over all other orders, decorations and medals, except theVictoria Cross. The GC is thehighest gallantry award for civilians, as well as for members of thearmed forcesin actions for which purelymilitary honourswould not normally be granted.

The George Crosswas instituted on24 September 1940by King George VI. At this time, during the height of the Blitz, there was a strong desire to reward the many acts of civilian courage. The existing awards open to civilians were not judged suitable to meet the new situation, therefore it was decided that the George Cross and the George Medal would be instituted to recognise both civilian gallantry in the face of enemy action and brave deeds more generally.

The medal is in the shape of across pattéeinsilver. Arranged behind the cross, visible between the arms is a laurel wreath. On theobverseof the medal, the circular medallion in the centre depictsSt. Edward\'s crown. The reverse is plain which allows room for the engraving of the rank, name, and unit of its recipient. The award date is also engraved on the reverse of the medal. The medal is suspended by a white ribbon with two narrow dark blue stripes at the edge and one centre stripe in crimson.
