Thehobo nickelis asculpturalartform involving the creative modification of small-denominationcoins, essentially resulting in miniaturebas reliefs. Thenickel, because of its size, thickness, and relative softness, was a favored coin for this purpose. However, the term "hobo nickel" is generic, as carvings have been made from many different denominations.
Due to its low cost and portability, this medium was particularly popular amonghobos, hence the name.
This is a 1937 carved hobo nickel. This one is the infamous, "Cat and the Fiddle"! There are several pictures of this one, at different angles to show the depth of the carving. By turning the nickel, different aspects of the depth and shading are shown, and may look slightly in each photo. It is signed on the back. Take a look! Please look closely at the pictures.We try to take the best photos possible and allow big enlargements so you can see exactly what you are getting! All carvings are signed by Howard.
