PRESENTING...The Self-Interpreting Bible With an Evangelical Commentary by the Late Revd. Brown, Minister of the Gospel at Haddington London: R. Evans, 1815/ NT: London: Thomas Kelly, 1819. A scarce and lavish folio edition of John Brown\'s famousSelf Interpreting Bible; this being Vol II of a two volume set, covering psalms through the end of the Old Testament, and all of the New Testament. With engraved title page, frontispiece, and multiple full page engraved plates. The Self Interpreting Bible was Brown\'s most significant work, and it remained in print (edited by others), until well into the twentieth century. The objective of providing a commentary for ordinary people was very successful. The idea that the Bible was \"self-interpreting\" involved copious marginal references, especially comparing one scriptural statement with another. Brown also provided a substantial introduction to the Bible, and added an explication and \"reflections\" for each chapter. A measure of its popularity is that it was translated into Welsh, and its appearance in Robert Burns\'s \"Epistle to James Tennant.\"THIS VOLUME IS HUGE! Bible measures 11\" wide, roughly 17\" tall, and 3\" thick! Bible has an attractive mildly worn original leather binding with some signs of age, the spine with gilt ruled decorative ornate compartments and bands with 2 title labels \'BROWN\'S BIBLE\', also \'VOL 2\', with some rubbing and wear to extremities. Hinges loosened with age but intact. Binding holds firmly as Bible can be opened and breezed through with little concern. There is some minor soiling to the pages, as expected, but these pages have held up well with only minor wear and a few tiny folds and wrinkles...in other words, GREAT SHAPE. Engraved title page is breathtaking, frontis and all engravings clean and accounted for. All pages bound tight. Single inscription in front, as shown. Good luck!!
