Vintage Specialized mountain bike rear hub, #SP-SSH-125.Vintage mid 1980s.
36 holes.Solid axle with \"track\" nuts.ISO freewheel threads. 126 OLN with approx. 31mm of freewheel spacing, fits 5-speed (or Ultra-6) freewheels. Sealed and replaceable cartridge bearings. Weight 305g.(These were made in Japan by Sansin, as I recall.)
Back in the early days of mountain bikes, road bike components were often adapted for off-road use. Most could not stand up to it for long, so component designers like Specialized quickly came up with off-road specific parts. For example, this hub\'s wider OLN made for a nearly dishless and stronger rear wheel, as well as improving the chainline with triple cranksets. The solid 10mm axle resisted bending better than a hollow one. Sealed cartridge bearings resisted contamination better, and damaged ones could be replaced relatively easily.
Excellent used condition. Has been laced but does not show any signs of abuse. Not anodized, so it can be as highly polished as you like.
