Huichol Indian Mexican Folk Art Hand Beaded Bracelet Peyote Deer Black:
$25.00

This is beautiful, wide, quality, hand-beaded bracelet made by the Huichol Indians of Mexico. It has rich colors of red peyote flowers, green foliage, and white deer against a black base. Classic Huichol patterns. When fastened, it measures 7 3/4\" around. It is 1 3/4\" wide.
The estimation is that only 8,000 Huichol Indians remain. The Huichols have been struggling to maintain their traditional culture, art, and religion in a world which has unsuccessfully tried to integrate them into Mexican life. They are a very creative indigenous group living in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Jalisco, Durango and Nayarit. They are know for their beautiful yarn paintings and jewelry and art objects decorated with small commercially produced beads. The patterns created in both art forms symbolize deep spiritual and cultural meaning to the Huichols, including their use of peyote to obtain spiritual enlightenment. Their yarn paintings are complicated works of art with designs pressed into boards coated with wax and resin and are derived from a ceremonial tablet called a neirika. The Huichol also have a long history of beading, making beads from clay, shells, coral, seeds and more, using them to make jewelry and to decorate bowls and other items. Beads on art objects like jaguar heads are fastened with wax and resin. The sale of their art helps sustain their way of life.
