Our hurdy gurdies are offered affordably so people who want to expand their musical experiences can do so without too much financial strain.

They are intended to be a fun hobby, not a potential add on for a professional musician - though we do have a few professional musicians who have purchased them and are quite happy with them. Speaking of which, we now have a video shot by one of our happy customers playing his new Gallopin\' Gurdies Hurdy Gurdy! See it at:

Gallopin\' Gurdies

This Diatonic Hurdy Gurdy was made by local woodworkers/luthiers in Oregon who enjoy making folk musical instruments both common and unusual.

All of our instruments are completely hand made and while they all have the same body shape and style, there will never be 2 identical Hurdy Gurdy\'s due to the fact that wood grain and coloration can vary wildly among the same woods - even the same tree...

Each Hurdy Gurdy features a violin tailpiece for the chanter strings, and 4 guitar tuners - which make tuning accurate and more reliable than friction pegs that tend to slip.

Please take note: The Hurdy Gurdy pictured is not the actual instrument you\'re purchasing. It will be the same color and the same décor as this one but grain patterns will vary as real wood never produces the exact same patterns repeatedly.

It does include the guitar strap (colors may vary), and we also include a 3 page Care and Maintenance Guide for your Gurdy which covers in depth how to tune& cottonthe strings& rosin the wheel. Sorry, we do not include extra strings, cotton, or rosin.

It has 4 strings and 12 noter keys in a single row forming a diatonic scale with the flexibility to play in several keys. The tangents are adjustableso you can really dial in the individual notes just the way you like it.

They are currently strung with full sized Viola \"A\" & \"D\" (Chanters) and \"C\" & \"G\" (Drone) Strings, steel with nylon core for a rich melodious sound. While the adjustable tangents allow for flexibility in tuning to different keys, we have tuned them to G Major with the open chanter strings tuned to \"D\". This gives a very nice voice straight away while you\'re learning how cool this instrument really is!

The drones feature a rest position so you can play your Gurdy with both (full sound), one (backup sound), or neither (for a duet effect of the chanters only) of the drones to achieve the sound you want.

The keys function as they should.

Body is about 17\" long, about 24\" including the peg head and turning knob.

About 9 \" wide at widest point

About 7\" high, from back of body to top ofkey box.

Crank turns with the right hand, keys are played with the left hand.

Hurdy Gurdys are folk instruments that can be played with regular sheet music,or\"by ear\", ormake your own music!

Compose your own tunes or play established ones. It\'s all good!

These are a lot of fun to play and play with.

If I have any reason to believe that you are a 3rd party seller or \"middleman\", I will cancel your order immediately and block you from future dealings with Gallopin\' Gurdies.

Wikipedia: The hurdy-gurdy is a stringed instrument that produces sound by a crank-turned, rosined wheel rubbing against the strings. The wheel functions much like a violin bow, and single notes played on the instrument sound similar to those of a violin. Melodies are played on a keyboard that presses tangents against one or more of the strings to change their pitch. Like most other acoustic stringed instruments, it has a sound board to make the vibration of the strings audible. Most hurdy-gurdies have multiple drone strings, which give a constant pitch accompaniment to the melody, resulting in a sound similar to that of bagpipes. For this reason, the hurdy-gurdy is often used interchangeably or along with bagpipes, particularly in Occitan, Catalan, Sardinian, Cajun French and contemporary Galician and Hungarian folk music. Many folk music festivals in Europe feature music groups with hurdy-gurdy players.
