CIVILWAR ERA LOST CONFEDERATE PLACER GOLD MINING CLAIM

Discovered& worked by “Confederate Sympathizers” during the Civil War

Notreally “lost”, as this placer gold deposit is briefly describedin one single authoritative historical mining publication. Thisplacer gold deposit is a very rare example of a large surfaceresidual/eluvial gold deposit. Meaning, it is not an alluvial placergold deposit concentrated by stream flow water. The numerous goldbearing vein outcrops the placer gold here eroded from are obviouslyvisible all over the property.

Noflowing streams eroded directly through the deposits. The veinseroded in-place (some of the vein float material contains visiblegold- pictured), and placer gold eroded down-slope primarily fromnormal slope erosion, snow melt surface flow, frost creep, etc.

This isnot some pie in the sky placer gold deposit. It had very substantialplacer production circa 1865/75 and the hand mining methods usingrocker boxes, sluice boxes, used then were extremely rudimentary. Nodata or records on how much placer gold was recovered here, becauseit was discovered and mined before production records were kept circa1865, during the Civil War. Judging by the size & scope of theold workings here, thousands of ounces of placer gold was recovered.Otherwise, the workings would not as substantial as exists.

Giventhe isolation of the deposit, no towns, roads or navigable riversclose by & hostile Indians that would rob/kill white men thegeneral area. The old timers could only afford to work rich ground.Supplies, tools & food were extremely expensive there, thenbecause of the distances, difficulties & dangers in packing themin by foot, horseback or pack mule. If the ground they were workingdidn’t pay at least a ¼ to ½ ounce per square yard of bedrockthey exposed, they would “starve out”.

Circa1865 placer mining on this property could only be done in areas whereminers could ditch water by gravity flow. Ditching water waslaborious, difficult, time consuming & costly. Given theConfederate mind-set no people of “color” were allowed to work orre-work this deposit.

Vastareas on site could not be thoroughly mined or mined at allbecause adequate up-slope water could not be gravity flow ditched toconsiderable areas of the high grade ground.

Thedeposit is apparently untouched by human hands since the Civil Warera, and has NEVER been worked by modern earth moving equipment. There are no backhoe-bulldozer pits/trenches, no beer/sodacans/bottles, pull can tabs, shell casings or any of the modern trashnormally found in large old placer workings. It was only mined byrudimentary hand methods, and appears as if the civil war era minerswho mined it long ago left yesterday.

Moreover, once a ditch line was established to pay-dirt ground, overburden wasside-cast by hand, to the right & left of the ditch. In doing so,as much pay-dirt on bedrock was covered as was exposed. Meaning, there is almost as much pay-dirt under the overburden, as was mined. As the old timers did not move the overburden twice, to mineunderneath it.

Thisdeposit contains significant yardage of shallow paying ground attoday’s gold price, and is perfectly suit backhoe/excavator,bulldozer & high volume wash plant mining operation. There isample water in-on & around the property to mine here, usingmodern day mining methods & equipment. Not to mention, asignificant tonnage of exposed oxidized free milling gold ore existspiled up at all the vein outcrops.
