You are offerding on an ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR albumen (larger than a CDV Carte de visite) oval-sized photograph of 16 Confederate prisoners of war and one political prisoner taken by Philadelphia photographer John L. Gihon (1839-1878) on July 6, 1864 inside the prison complex at Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island.The photograph appears in wood cut form in the diary of Reverend Isaac W.K. Handy, \"U.S. Bonds or Duress by Federal Authority.\" Reverend Handy, is the civilian male sitting center of the group in the photograph for sale. On July 6, 1864, Handy writes, \"A photographer has been allowed to visit \"the pen,\" and has been busy, to-day, taking sundry pictures, to help the Yankee pockets, and bring joy to many a \"Rebel\" heart at the South. I had two groups taken myself, with fifteen faces in one, and eight in the other. The first embraces a number of friends, who have been prominent in the late revival scenes, and the other, several of the young men connected with the Theological class.\"According to the woodcut in Handy\'s diary, the confederate soldiers are Capt. George W. Lewis (Georgia), Capt. George W. Moore (Georgia), Lt. James F. Caldwell (Missouri), Capt. Frank C. Robbins (Alabama), Private John H. Maynadier (Maryland?), Lt. W.M. Bullock (Mississippi), Capt. A.M. Samford (Texas), Capt. Chas. T. Cyrus (Tennessee), Lt. F.C. Moore (Tennessee), Rev. Dr. Handy (Virginia), Capt. William R. White, Lt. John C. Allen (Virginia), Lt. Claude C. Turner (South Carolina), Capt. Thomas W. Harris (Georgia), Capt. H.L.W. Johnson (Arkansas), Lt. Col. Isaac Hardeman (12th Georgia), and Lt. George W. Finley (Virginia). The same day, Confederate Capt. James Lile Lemon writes, \"July 6, Ft. Delaware, We were visited to day by a photographist from Philadelphia who asked that we sit for our portraits & after some debate among us we agreed as there was no harm in it, but my old uniform was in rags & stained with blood & ect & unfit for a portrait & I was glad that he had among his effects a few Confederate coats one of which I put on & then set for him.\"The image you are offerding on is oval on a matte with Gihon\'s name and address of 1024 Chestnut Street on the reverse. Handy\'s diary mentions that Gihon was sent for and selected by the post commander Brig. Gen. Albin F. Schoepf. Gihon visited the island, capturing photos of union and confederate soldiers from as early as 1863 until about 1870. The woodcut scan from Handy\'s diary appears in this sale but not for sale. Also, I scanned the photo for sale on B&W and also appears in the photo. This group shot also appears in the collection of Isaac Handy and appears in a history book of his family with the printed mark of Gihon as well.Don\'t miss out on this rare piece of history!
