This sale is for the ORIGINAL World War One US 5th \"Red Diamond\" Division Insignia Painted M1917 Helmet of First Lieutenant Angelus Teague Burch of Topeka, Kansas. First Lieutenant Burch served with the 11th Field Artillery Regiment, Battery \"C.\" Lieutenant Burch\'s FAINT and Faded Initials are Visible to the Underside of the Rim and Read \"ATB.\" A previous custodian of the helmet placed a small note on the underside of the rim to help us see them. Lieutenant Burch was wounded \"An Hour Before War Ceased\" and an older typed note in this group that appears to be from a family member states that he was wearing THIS helmet when he was wounded, however there is absolutely no way of proving that was the case. The account of his being wounded is documented in a copy of a newspaper article that you will receive and can see above. It is also documented in a letter that he wrote home in January of 1919 that you will also receive a copy of. A copy of HIS LETTER Can Be Found ONLINE by conducting a Google Search on \"The Merriest Christmas, 1981, American Heritage, Burch.\" The Letter was actually Published in American Heritage Magazine in December of 1981 and Can Be Found Online Now with some Biographical Information about LT Burch. You receive a copy of this letter printed from the American Heritage Magazine in 2007 with this grouping. The Article Begins with the following note:December, 1918; the war was over. There was special reason for cheer that Christmas, particularly for those who had done the fighting, even for those who had been cut down and now waited for their wounds to heal in France before returning home. It shines through the following letter, written on January 10, 1919, from a hospital in Mesves, France, and recently discovered by Rita Cheronis of Deerfield, Illinois, who was kind enough to pass it along to us. The writer is Lieutenant Angélus T. Burch and the letter is addressed to his family in Kansas. Burch went on to become a journalist and at one time was associate editor of the Chicago Daily NewsThis helmet comes with approximately 25 Pages of Research as Well as Copies of Original Photos, Articles About and Written By Lieutenant Burch and a Few typed Notes. MUCH of the Research was Conducted Ten Years Ago and based on some of the included information, the helmet was featured on US Militaria Forum quite some time ago as well. There is a wealth of information online regarding LT Burch as he came from a prominent family in Kansas and went on to become a Newspaper Editor in Chicago. As the HELMET is Incomplete we will describe what is here. The Helmet Shell shows Age, Wear and Use, but Remains in GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION. It maintains approximately 80-85% of it\'s original texture and finish and has aged to a very attractive Medium Olive Patina. There are NO Dings or Dents to the helmet but there is some minor warping to the rim that is visible in the photos. There is some very minor, light rust to the rim that is visible to the exterior and several spots of surface rust to the underside of the helmet as well. This is all visible in the photos. The Lot Number Remains Clearly Visible at the Seam and Reads \"ZC 178.\"As previously stated LT Burch\'s Initials are Present to the Underside of the Rim. They appear to have been scratched into the surface during the war. Age and wear has made the initials Faint, Worn and Hard to See. However, they are visible as you can see in the photo provided above. A small note with an arrow was attached to the helmet by a previous owner and as it helps to see the initials, we left it there and it will be there when you receive the helmet. The Painted \"RED DIAMOND\" Insignia to the exterior of the helmet remains in VERY GOOD CONDITION and Maintains Approximately 90% of it\'s Red Paint. The insignia remains BOLD, Clear and Easy to See. It has darkened with age and shows some wear, but Remains Very Apparent. It is of the typical size seen on Painted WWI 5th Division Helmets and remains a Very Nice Example. The Liner is in RELIC / POOR Condition and Shows Excessive Age, Wear and Use. Every aspect is damaged and heavily worn as you can see in the photos. The Liner Does Remain in the Helmet and Has NOT Separated. It still remains attached to the helmet and the interior chinstrap portion. It is nothing short of a miracle that the Maker\'s Stamp and Manufacture Date Remain BOLD and Clearly Visible to the Rear of the Oil Cloth. The Huge \"R. H. Long 7 - 18\" Maker\'s Stamp Remains BOLD and Clearly Visible to the Rear of the Oil Cloth as can be seen in the photos above. There is NO External Chinstrap and the Leather Portion that remains inside the helmet shows age, wear and neglect but remains firmly attached. While this helmet is by no means in perfect condition, it is an extremely nice piece due to it being identified to a Wounded and Well Known 5th Division Officer. It could certainly be considered a Museum Quality Piece and Could Definitely fit into the Holdings of an Advanced Collector, especially a 5th Division Collector. Based on what we see here, we believe the helmet was released by a family member as there is a typed note regarding LT Burch\'s personal life and his son. The note gives a story about him being wounded and states that he was wearing THIS helmet when it occurred. The note is unsigned and we can in no way prove that he was actually wearing this helmet when he was wounded, but it is a nice bit of \"family lore.\" We obtained this helmet from a very dear friend who is himself an advanced collector and exceptional historian. We are very confident that you will be very pleased with this helmet when you receive it and proud to add it to your collection.
