IMPORTANT PAIR of Fine 18th-19th Century QING / MUGHAL FOOTED JADE RINGED BOWLS:
$9000.00

A rare and exquisite pair Late 18th - Early 19th Century (1735 - 1820) Chinese Qianlong reign altar bowls, lobed and in floriform Mughal style with formal chrysanthemum handles on either side, flanked with leaves and supported by intricate stems below each blossom, within which a single ring hangs freely. They stand upon four ruyi form feet, both the interior and underside of the bowls are flat and highly polished, revealing a bright and lustrous sheen. The jade itself is of particular interest, as there are metallic (pyrite) micro-inclusions which shimmer like small flakes of gold, creating a subtle contrast against the lustrous dark moss-green jade. See pair in \"The Yangtze River Collection, 1993\" on page 17. A scan of book and corresponding page is attached (photos #2 and #3), and the book is included in this sale. The Pair shown in the book were on display at the Museum of Fine Arts, Florida in 1993. They were displayed again at the Museum of Asian Art in Florida. They were sold at sale by Chamberlain Antiques with a starting offer of $9.99 in September 2015, selling for $15,000 USD.

The description for the pair in the book reads:
Nephrite: Dark Green With Black, Metallic Specks And Minor Lighter Green Patches
Late 18th-19th Century
A pair of...shaped basins make up this handsome set of dark-green thinly-carved highly-polished vessels in the Mughal style from the later Qing period. They are fully-decorated with low relief carving of taotie masks and floral designs over the external surfaces and with the independently-moving handles, so characteristic of the period, suspended from formal floral heads. Their formality and perfection of type are also characteristic of the extant larger altar garnitures produced in several mid-late Qing workshops, either in the archaistic style reflecting the classical past or in the popular contemporary Mughal style (Palmer, #25; NA, pp. 152, 154, #205; Watt 2, p. 170, #144; Foster, p. 62, #121; Keverne, p. 151, #56; and CNY 11/29/90, #334). A well-known example of a five-piece altar set in dark green nephrite, said to have appeared in the West following the looting of the Summer Palace outside Beijing in 1860, is now part of the collection of the Lizzadro Museium of Lapidary Arts (Gump, p 224; Lytle, pp 38-41.)Listing is GOOD TIL CANCELED.
