A fabulous, barely used gentleman\'s18K solid gold manual watch in amazing original un-restored conditionfrom the International Watch Company (IWC), one of the most prestigious watchmakers in the world. This is a very expensive connoisseur’s watch made by a low volume elite company which has a reputation among aficionados for producing some of the finest quality watches in the world. The movements in these watches are pure works of art and of a quality which is second to none. To those who have only a passing interest in top quality watches, an IWC watch is not immediately obvious as a high end timepiece but at sales, hammer prices of IWC models often surpass the levels reached by more well known high end makes. IWC watches are truly remarkable and HIGHLY sought after by collectors (who must have at least one) as well people wanting to wear a watch with elegance and understated class. I always keep at least one in my own collection.

This example datesto around thelate 1960\'s.The 18K case and dial presentbeautifully and the freshly serviced movement is running strongly and keeping time.Fitted with a new strap and crystal, this watch is ready to wear and enjoy.

The case is hallmarked as 18K solid gold on the outside and inside of the rear cover.Showing just thethe expected light signs of careful and infrequent use over the years the case shows no dents or scratches of any significance that I could see to draw to your attention. The face of the crown is showing some wear.

Movement: IWC 17 jewel mechanism just returned from a full service which most newly purchased vintage watches require and costs upwards of £200 for a watch of this quality so please factor in that this work has been undertaken when considering the competitive price I am asking for this watch. The watch is winding and setting smoothly, running strongly and keeping time. The movement is signed “International Watch Co. Swiss”.

Strap: fitted with anew generic brown leather lizard grain strap, which attached to the watch measures approximately 210 mm from buckle tip to last hole.

International Watch Co.

For those who like to find out a little about the history of famous watchmakers, the International Watch Company was formed in 1868 and is still manufacturing watches today. The dials on most of its watches are marked Schaffhausen; this is the name of the town in which IWC watches are made. The company has a volatile history with several near bankruptcies during its early years. It was taken over by the wealthy Rauschenbach family in 1879, in whose ownership it remained for over a century. It is the only notable watch making company in German Switzerland and is now owned by the German tachometer manufacturer, VDO. It has always been and still is a high quality, niche watchmaker producing small volumes of superlative timepieces for discerning, wealthy buyers. The craftsmanship that goes into these watches is superb. During its long history of watch making, IWC has produced its own calibers (movements). Unlike a number of its competitors, IWC never bought in \"ebauches\" (a complete \"raw movement\" without the escapement, balance, hairspring, mainspring, dial and hands) but made every part of their movements in-house. For this reason the company has had total control over its production and has achieved its well deserved reputation for being placed among the world’s elite watchmakers.

Terms of Sale

I pack my watches very well to avoid damage but very occasionally a problem may occur due to rough treatment in transit or the use of scanning equipment by Customs or the postal services which can magnetise the watch mechanism. I warrant that the watch you purchase will, when you receive it, be as described in the listing. If there is a problem when you receive your purchase I provide a no quibble full refund option. Alternatively I will undertake any repairs that are necessary if the watch is damaged or if in any other way differs significantly from the description. If I have not stated that the watch has been serviced, you may wish to have this work done, particularly if you intend to wear the watch on a daily basis. On request, I can provide you with details of independent watchmakers to whom you can send your watch for servicing.

I provide comprehensive details of my watches, including very clear photographs taken with a high resolution macro lens which shows detail not visible to the naked eye.I also invite you to ask questions if there is anything else you need to know. Please take care to consider the dimensions of the watch case as if it is a gentlemans’ Art Deco rectangular vintage watch, they were made significantly smaller than contemporary watches.

You are buying a used watch so there will be signs of use. Please do not expect quartz accuracy from a vintage watch. In the 1940’s/1950’s the accepted timekeeping tolerance for a new 17 jewel manual watch was within three minutes a day. All of my watches are professionally inspected and tested before sale and if they are not running smoothly and keeping reasonable time I have them serviced and/ or have any other work undertaken that is needed to ensure the watch is in running condition. However please bear in mind that a fault can develop unexpectedly at any time as with any used item so I am unable to provide any on-going warranty. Please also note that I provide no guarantee that my watches are waterproof. I would always strongly recommend keeping any vintage well away from moisture.
