ID’d IDENTIFIED SIGNED ARMED 10th New York NY Artillery Civil War Soldier CDVSignature & unit in period ink on the front of the CDV Frank Ashcraft - Co. D, 10th NY Artillery This sale is for a CDV of an IDENTIFIED Civil War Federal soldier, in his dress uniform. He has a PISTOL tucked into his belt! And the CDV is SIGNED! Written in ink at the bottom of the CDV - and very legible! - are the soldier’s signature and unit information.
SUBJECTThe soldier is wearing an enlisted man\'s frock coat, with two buttons on each of his cuffs and a stripe of cording indicative of his branch of service (in this case, red). He wearsregulation pants and an oval U.S. buckle on his leather belt. The oval belt buckle was standard issue for enlisted men. He wears shoulder scales, generally worn only on dress occasions.I haven’t seen many CDVs of soldiers with shoulder scales; most are in the campaign uniforms. I think he’s wearing a kepi with the brim upturned. He is wearing the hat high on his head, like he is very comfortable in it. He has a pistol - Colt? - tucked into his belt, at hand and ready to use. His arm rests on a photo album, and he wears a ring on his pinkie.
LOCATIONThis photograph was most likely taken in Washington, D.C. The backmark indicates that the photographer’s studio was in Washington.
IDENTIFICATIONThe soldier has SIGNED his name and his unit in period ink on the front of the CDV, at the bottom, below his photograph:Frank Ashcraft / Co D 10th N Y ArtyHis full name is Franklin E. Ashcraft, and the full name of the unit was the 10th New York Heavy Artillery (nps.gov). He enlisted as a private and mustered out as a private.
SERVICE RECORDAug 11, 1862Enlisted at Wilna, age 26Sept 11, 1862Mustered in as a private,Co. B, 1st Battalion, Black River Artillery (later Co. D, Tenth New York Artillery),toserve 3 yearsJune 23, 1865Mustered out with company at Petersburg, Virginia
The 10th NY Heavy Artillery regiment provided garrison duty in the defenses of Washington, D.C., until May 1864. They were then ordered to join the Army of the Potomac in the field May 27, 1864. They participated in the Battle of Cold Harbor, Va. (June 5-12, 1864) and the siege of Petersburg, Va. (June 16-Aug 15, 1864). They returned to Washington, D.C. on August 15, 1864 and stayed there until September 27. They were then ordered to the Shenandoah Valley and they participated in the Battle of Cedar Creek (October 19, 1864). They then returned to Washington, then moved to Bermuda Hundred, Va. and duty in the Defences until March 1865. They participated in the Appomattox Campaign (March 28-April 9, 1865), and then the Assault on and fall of Petersburg, Va. (April 2, 1865). They remained in Virginia until June 1865.
I will be happy to include the printouts of this information (with sources) with the CDV for the winning buyer.
PHOTOGRAPHER & CARD MOUNTThe photographer is Godkin, shown on the back of the CDV as:Godkin. / Washington, / Fort Baker, / and / Emory Hospital.
Frank Ashcraft was in Washington, D.C. when this photograph was taken, sometime prior to May 1864.
The photograph is mounted on the CDV upside-down. I have seen several upside-down mountings - apparently the photographers didn’t really worry about things like this!
CONDITIONThe photo image is very, very sharp! You can even tell where the soldier’s fingernail on his index finger is cut way too short! There are no tears, holes, or repairs. There are some scratches going from just above the soldier’s head down past his cheek. They\'re not very noticeable from the front unless you look for them, especially if the CDV is in a toploader, but you can see them if you hold the CDV at an angle. The corners have been bumped ever so slightly, like so many CDVs of this era. The CDV was apparently pulled from a photo album, as there are spots at the corners on the back where a layer of the cardboard mount was pulled off.
Please be sure to take a look at the photographs to judge the condition of the CDV for yourself.
