First edition; hardcover; 6.25 x 4 inches; vii, 502, [2] pages, profuse with black and white drawings.

Brown embossed cloth over boards with gilt titles and decoration to front board and spine. Boards show heavy wear, cloth splitting along front joint, rear board detached, a little loosening to a few preliminary and terminal pages (though still intact), otherwise the binding remains remarkably sound.

Despite its condition, this is a remarkable book, and very scarce. A very comprehensive guide to all manners of conduct for living, often presented humorously. 26 chapters, each broken into multiple sections cover subjects including Principles of Behavior, Science of Behavior, Happiness, Good Manners in general, A Hint to Ladies, Work for Ladies, The Hair, Hints to the Beautiful, The Art of Walking, Things You Must Avoid, Etiquette of the Table, Freedom of Women, Music, Writing and Correspondence, Fashion and the Toilette, Horsemanship, Gymnastics, Dancing, National Pastimes, and on and on. A good deal of attention is paid to the rights and roles of women in those modern times.
