Fine antique French press photo of General Nikolai Vladimirovich Russky ( 1854-1918) in 1914.On leaving the infantry military school in St. Petersburg in 1874 he was given a commission in the Guard. Graduating from the Academy of the General Staff in 1881, he served as an officer of the general staff in the Kiev military district, and by 1896, after commanding an infantry regiment, had reached general\'s rank. From 1896 to 1902 he was Deputy Chief of Staff at the Kiev Military District. He fought in the Russo-Japanese War as Chief of Staff for the 2nd Manchurian army. At the beginning of the First World War , he was appointed Commander of the 3rd Army and defeated the Austro-Hungarian 3rd Army under General Rudolf von Brudermann at Gnila Lipa. He enjoyed a special friendship with the unpopular War Minister, Sukhomlinov. It was at his headquartersin Pskov in March 1917 that the final scenes of Nicholas II\'s reign and his abdication took place. In September 1918 he was captured by the Red Army and murdered.Size: 16 x 12 cm approx
