AN IMPORTANT 4-STRING MOUNTAIN DULCIMERHAND CARVED AND SIGNED JOHN MAXWELL #2524, LATE 1970\'SUPPER CUMBERLAND CRAFT CENTER, COOKEVILLE, TN
Beautiful completely hand made 4-string mountain dulcimer from John L. Maxwell, of Cookeville, Tennessee. Has two stickers inside, see photos. It is strung, I have been playing it and the piece sounds GREAT! I especially like the wider fingerboard, easy for a petite person to play, but also good for folks (like me) with bigger hands.
Maxwell (1922 - 1981) was an iconic and historically important figure in the world of dulcimers -- there are Maxwell dulcimers at the Museum of Appalachia, the White House, and another at Elvis Presley\'s Graceland. They are in the collections of folk musicians around the world. He made a couple thousand dulcimers from the mid-1960\'s through the late 1970\'s, known for their graceful teardrop bodies and tuning pegs as big as paddles. If you wanted a Maxwell dulcimer back in the day, you had to wait your turn, no matter how famous you were.
It is important to note that this is dulcimer #2524 so it is one of the very last he made in his life.
Made from book-matched (front and back) cherry wood, with beech friction tuning pegs. It has an unusually wide (1-3/4\") fingerboard made from a single piece of wood, hollowed out underneath, with the top panels tacked on each side. Additional resonator holes are carved into the fourth fret. No 6-1/2 fret. The neat scroll open-box head stock is deliberately left with its carving marks to further its rustic appeal. It has f-shaped sound holes on the lower bout, and diamonds on the upper bout. The top and back are fiddle-edged. Hard plastic nut and bridge, the latter being only a very short distance from the high tailpiece which also acts as the string anchor for ball-end strings.
Measurements: Overall length 33-1/2\", Upper Bout Width 4-1/2\", Lower Bout Width 6-5/8\", Fret Board Width 1-3/4\", Body Depth 1-3/4\" Length Between Nut and Bridge 26-1/2\", weight 1lb 12oz (803 grams).
