The pichvai, pichwai, pichhavai (literally, ‘something at the back’) is an Indian temple hanging (paint on cotton cloth) with scenes from the life of the Hindu deity Lord Krishna (always blue) and is used as a backdrop for the statue of the temple deity. Originally, these were made for different seasons and festivals for use at worship but later they came to be sold to pilgrims. The pichvai has made its transition from the religious to the secular, making colorful decorative hangings in urban homes. In this thin layer of starch is applied on the cloth and painting is done in tempera.
