Fine quality ladies vanity – dressing box in good conditionmad during the mid 1800’s. Measures approximately 12” x 9” x 6”. Unspoiltpatina. Even colour and grain (no unsightly light bleaching). Inlaid triplepewter bands to the top and front with Mother of Pearl cartouche andescutcheon. No missing or replaced inlays or veneer. Top closes square andtrue. Impressive interior with gilt embossed top edges to the tray and reardividers complementing the gilt edging to the lid interior and gilt embossed‘frame’ to the drop forward velvet panel. To the back of the panel is a ‘loveletter’ envelope that is in excellent condition. Both side folds are stillfully intact and the interior looks to be in unused condition. Further spacebehind the panel for a few more papers/photographs etc. All lining throughoutthe box is in very good condition with some minor wear to one of the small jarsections. Removable tray with additional storage space beneath. All of the fourlids feature embossed velvet tops….three with Mother of Pearl knobs with thelargest lid having hoops to retain manicure accessories…..The retaining hoopsindicate some wear but far less than the norm. The manicure items are I believereplacements and include a matching set of three items featuring hallmarkedsolid silver handles and top for the nail ‘buffer’. All four storage sections beneath the lidshave the remains of the original foil lining, some wear but far more of theoriginal foil than the norm.(See photograph 7). The other two velvet sectionscomprise of a needle wallet and padded pin cushion. Four ‘open’ sectionscontaining jars comprising of two matching pairs. All glass is in very goodcondition with equal wear through of the original snug fitting silver platedtops. It is quiteremarkable given the age of this item that with the exception of a TINY hole inthe pin cushion that ALL of the velvet is tear free and perhaps even moresurprising that the gilt embossed side tabs on the tray are still fully intactwith barely any signs of wear of the gilt embossing!!! Obviously the item hasseen little in the way of use by the many generations of previous owners.Original hinges and lock with a working key supplied (A tad fiddly but DOESwork). A fine piece of early Victorian woodenware.
