First used as a coin design over 500 years ago in 1465 during the reign of England’s King Edward IV, the Gold Angel soon became popular and served as a diversion from the War of the Roses that divided the nation. It was believed to bring good luck to the holder, and in an era dominated by wars and plagues, it was said to have miraculous healing powers. In addition to its stunning design, this was the first coin ever produced as a bimetallic gold and platinum coin. It was struck from one-eighth ounce of gold surrounded by a one-eighth ounce platinum outer ring.
