Amazing, lifelike portrait of a young girl by James S. Cummins (1841-1895)of Baltimore Maryland. This work is on heavy card stock measuring 16.25 by 19.5 inches.It bears his business/studio stamp on the reverse. I have not found his signature on thefront. This is a mixed media, employing watercolor, gouache, pastel/chaulk and seemsto have some underdrawing. really a stunning work and in very fine conditionas shown. The following is from Marianne Murdock, an art dealer and artist. She writes:

\"I have recently acquired two small watercolors done by a 19th century photographer/artist by the name of James S. Cummins. ... The information coming from the research done in the past few days is very interesting and the art is fabulous. I will add an insert here from a 19th century description of the studio .

In \"Half Century\'s Progress of the City of Baltimore\" (published 1886) there is a description of James Cummins:

\'James S. Cummins, Photographic Studio, no. 5 North Charles Street ... The achievements of the leading artists of the present day are subjects of admiration and comment from an appreciative audience. The name Cummins will in this connection be inseparably identified with a large measure of success in Baltimore as the leading \"artist photographer\" in the city. The
reception rooms, parlors and studio are elegant, spacious and attractive and are embellished with many fine works of art from the camera, brush or pencil of Mr. Cummins. The excellence of these pictures and their fidelity to every detail, and the true conception of the artist\'s mission, place Mr Cummins in the front rank of the profession. ...Mr Cummins produces all kinds of
work, from the carte de visite to the imperial cabinet.
