This is a mid Meiji Era (c. 1890) haribako (sewing box) with a unique arrangement of four drawerswith an additionaltop area. On the back side of the toparea(inside) is a slot in which abamboo measuring device (not included) could be stored.This type of tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables.

The entire chest is made of Japanese keyaki (zelkova) woodwith akijiro lacquer over a persimmon tannin stain on the outside,as well asblack lacquer interiors. The hardware is all hand forged copper with an aged patina. This chest is all original and overall in very fine condition with a very warm patina that only nearly a century of loving use could give.

All drawers run smoothly and the lidded top opens and closes with ease. Please enjoy viewing the enlarged photos of this chest before offerding. This chest measures 13\" wide by 9 3/4\" high by 7 1/2\" deep (33 x 24.5 x 19 cm). Very solidly built, a great piece of Japanese history; and makes a classic desk top organizer today.
