JAPANESE ANTIQUE 150 YEAR OLD SIGNED LIDDED KIRI (PAULOWNIA) WOOD SCROLL BOX :

This late Edo era (c. 1860) lidded scroll box was made entirely of kiln dried kiri (paulownia). It was specially constructed to hold a specifickakejiku (Japanese scroll - not included). It is signed on the lid by the Japanese scroll artist (see pictures 4, 5 and others). This box shows a high degree of skill in the construction being made of all wooden peg construction throughout (see last 2 pictures). It has fittings at both ends to hold the scroll tips (see pictures 8 & 9).

A testament to its durability, even after over 150 years, with exception to a wonderful warm aged patina,it still remains in fine condition. It measures 22\"long by 3\" in square (53 x 7.5 cm). Innerdimension is 21 1/4\" x 2 1/4\" (54 x 6 cm). It is a fabulous storage box with centuries of warm patina and character. The lidded top fitsseamlesslyonto the base.
