JAPANESE ANTIQUE MEIJI ERA (C. 1900) TANSU CHESTNUT WOOD HARIBAKO SEWING BOX:

This is a late Meiji era antique (c. 1900)haribako(sewing box) with a unique arrangement of three drawers.This type of tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables.

Thisharibakois made of solid chestnut wood with sugi(cedar) wood drawer interiors (see picture 8).All the handles are made of forged copper with a deep aged patina (see picture 9).

This haribako has been well used yet well loved, with the exception of very minor signs of loving use, it remains invery fine conditionthroughout. Please enjoy viewing the enlarged photos of this chest. This chest measures 8 1/4\" wide by 10 3/4\" deep by 10 1/2\" high (21 x 27.5 x 26.5 cm). Very solidly built, a great piece of Japanese history; and makes a great jewelry box or a classic desk top organizer today.
