Japanese Antique Signed Bronze Silver Gold Chokin Fusion Vase Pheasant & Maple For Sale
An impressive Japanese bronze vasedating to the Taisho Era (c. 1925). It is a thick bronze with gold and silver chokin reliefimages of a pheasant perched on the branch of a maple tree, looking back at two blooming chrysanthemums. On one side is the artist's signature Seihou (meaning "bright peak," see picture 5).
Chokin is the ancient Japanese art of engravingbronze and gilding it with precious gold and silver. This art form dates back over 700 years in Japan. The engravings were originally created to decorateshrines, temples and the armament of samurai warriors.
This bronze vase has been well used yet well loved,with adeep patina, and with the exception of a few scratches and three indentations (see pictures 6 & 7) it remains overall infine condition It is water tight and would make a magnificent center piece with or without flowers. It measures 9 1/2" high by 5 3/4" wide (24 x14.5 cm).
