JAPAN: N. D. c1860 [published date: 1860]. Rare First edition. First issue. 8vo. 7\" x 5\" Inches (LxB). 30 double leaves, including a blank. A few illustrations. Unpaginated pages, bound in yellow wrappers sewn in Japanese style. An undated but early Meiji textbook which emphasizes the importance of learning English - the language used by America - in moving Japan forward in the world of today. The lesson book takes the Japanese student through the alphabet with the Japanese sounds beneath. The alphabet is shown in printed capital letters, small printed letters, and handwritten letters. These are followed by Chinese \"kanji\" characters with pronunciation and three scripts, leading on to numbers explained in similar ways. It ends up with the seasons, months of the year, and other basic items of general information. It seems a student used the book at some time, with pencil marks and notations. A rare book in fine original contemporary publisher\'s hand sewn Japanese binding. .A classic work.
