This is a beautiful and venerableHanging Scroll with a painting on paper by the artist, Kano Ryuhaku, who was born in 1665 and was active in the Early Edo Period. He most likely made this painting in the late 1600\'s. I believe the elegant mounting is original to the painting.

Ryuhaku was Kano Ujinobu\'s third son. He was adopted by his older brother, Ryusetsu, when the latter\'s child died. Ryuhaku succeeded Ryusetsu in leading the Odawara-cho atelier.

Ryuhaku\'s works are in many collections around the world including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Kyoto National Museum, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the British Museum.

The Kano school was the longest lived and most influential school of painting in Japanese history; its more than 300-year prominence is unique in world art history. Working from the fifteenth century into modern times, this hereditary assemblage of professional, secular painters succeeded in attracting numerous patrons from most affluent social classes by developing, mastering, and promoting a broad range of painting styles, themes and formats.as done in the present painting.

Ryuhakugives us in the foreground a most elegant representation of a solitary Crane, balancing on one foot standing next to a large bamboo plant. And nothing else. The rest of the paper is left empty, blank to imply the space in which the Cranes stands. This is a particularcharacteristicof Kano-ha painters.

I particularly admire the economy of means with which he accomplishes the fullness of theCrane\'s body, the elegant, one stroke sections of the bamboo and the wonderful touches of color in the Crane\'s face and legs

This scroll is measuring 69 inches long and 19 inches wide, not including the roller ends which are beautifully turned bone.

For a painting of around 330 or so years old, it is in very good condition, with no significant damage at all. There are several expert repairs to tiny lacunae, virtually invisible from the front,

The old mounting is also in good condition for it age, showing some signs of wear. The top and bottom portions are made rich blue silk with a herringbone pattern. The part surrounding the painting is made of a fine old brocade with a light gold ground and very large floral design in darker gold. And the two borders at the top and bottom of the painting are of brocade with a deep royal blue ground and a Kamon, or crest, of a Samurai family in metallic gold. The Futai are faced with the same material.

This Kamon may indicate the original ownership of this scroll. I found this particular Kamon in a scholarly list of Samurai from the Edo period,

Although the old mounting does show signs of wear, it is original to the painting and itsblues and golds make such an elegant frame for the old painting, that I think it well worth conserving.

The photos give a very good idea of the beauty and excellence of this venerable Hanging Scroll with its painting on paper byKano Ryuhaku from the late 1600\'s in the Edo Period.

And thanks for looking.

The painting on this scrollis around 330 or so years old and has passed through many difficult times including two World Wars, the Second of which was disastrous for its native country. For an unframed work on such a delicate support as paper, it is remarkable that it has survived at all, let alone in such good condition. But thispainting and similar works of art are not in absolutely perfect condition and they frequently show evidence of their long life. I endeavor to point out if and where there may be any damage, but the photographs tell the whole story. Please examine them carefully. If you are looking for something with absolutely no signs of age, I am afraid you will have to look elsewhere. In short, these beautiful scrolls were not born yesterday.

I indicate the artist\'s name based on a signature and/or seal and also the style, but occasionally a scroll may be a copy of a work by a famous painter. In the present case, I am sure that the painting is by Kano Ryuhaku.

Due to thelimitations of photography and the inevitable differences in monitor settings, the color of the pictures on your monitor may be slightly different from the scroll itself, but I did my best to capture it as it is. And, at least on my monitor, the color is a perfect match.
