JAPANESE HANGING SCROLL: Antique\"Mt Fuji with Waterfall\",

by Hishomen, c.1930.

This is a wonderful Hanging Scroll with a beautiful painting on silk by Hishomen, who was active up to the middle years of the last century. He most likely made this painting sometime between the two Great Wars, or around 1930. The elegant mounting is original to the painting.

Hishomen has given us a beautifully painted representation of Mt Fuji seen in the far distance, shrouded with mists, above a cascading waterfall.

I have never seen a painting with this kind of view of the Sacred Peak. It may be an invention of the artist.

But in any case, Hishomen has inventively combined two favorite subjects of Japanese artists.

Mt Fuji is the centuries\' old symbol of the Island Nation. In centuries long ago, the majority of the population of Japan lived on the east coast facing the ocean out of which the sun seemed to rise. I remember seeing a letter from an ancient Japanese Emperor addressed to his bother Emperor of China. It began, \"From the Emperor of the Land of the Rising Sun to the Lord of the Land of the Setting Sun.\" The Chinese Emperor was not pleased.

Waterfalls are a very popularsubject for Japanese artists, especially for scrolls to be displayed in the Summer, as the image of cascading water can be a refreshment in the warmer days.

This painting is simply very beautiful.

This scroll measures 77 inches long and 11 1/3 inches wide, not including the roller ends which are of bone. The painting is in nearly pristine condition with no damage whatsoever.

The elegant mounting is also in excellent condition. The top and bottom portions are made of a light sea foam green silk. The portion surrounding the painting is of a very fine brocade with a ground of the same sea foam green and a cloud motif in self colored threads The two borders at the top and bottom of the painting have a tan ground and an abstract floral design. The futai are faced with the same material and backed by the green silk.

The cool, pale greens of the mounting beautifully complement the more intense blues and greens of the painting.

The photos give a very good idea of the beauty and excellence of this elegant Hanging Scroll with its refreshing painting on silk by Hishomen from around 1930.

And thanks for looking.

This scrollis around 84 or so years old and has passed through many difficult times including the Second World Wars t which was disastrous for its native country. For an unframed work on such a delicate support as silk, it is remarkable that it has survived at all, let alone in such good condition. But thispainting and similar works of art are not in absolutely perfect condition and they frequently show evidence of their long life. I endeavor to point out if and where there may be any damage, but the photographs tell the whole story. Please examine them carefully. If you are looking for something with absolutely no signs of age, I am afraid you will have to look elsewhere. In short, these beautiful scrolls were not born yesterday.

I indicate the artist\'s name based on a signature and seal and also the style, but occasionally a scroll may be a copy of a work by a famous painter. In the present case, I am sure that the painting is by Hishomen.

Due to thelimitations of photography and the inevitable differences in monitor settings, the color of the pictures on your monitor may be slightly different from the scroll itself, but I did my best to capture it as it is. And, at least on my monitor, the color is a perfect match.
