This is an early Showa Era (c. 1930s) haribako (sewing box) with a unique arrangement of five drawerswith an additionalremovable top drawer and a hidden seventh drawerlocated behind theremovable drawer in the flip top lidded section. The removable section under the flip top lid is divided into three sections with a removable pin cushion on the left and on the far right a \"third hand\" which flips up and sets into place.

Behind this is a secret drawer, opened by pulling it out using the finger hole (see pictures 9 & 10). On the back right side is a slot in which a bamboo measuring device (not included) could be stored. This type of tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables.

The entire surface of this chest is made of burled Japanese maple wood veneer with kiri (paulownia) wood interiors. The hardware is all brass with an aged patina. This chest is all original and overall in very fine condition with a very warm patina that only nearly a century of loving use could give.

All drawers run smoothly and the lidded top opens and closes with ease. Please enjoy viewing the enlarged photos of this chest before offerding. This chest measures 12 5/8\" wide by 10 1/4\" high by 7 5/8\" deep (32 x 26 x 19.5 cm). Very solidly built, a great piece of Japanese history; and makes a classic desk top organizer today.
