This is an early Showa vintage (c.1930) haribako (sewing box) with a unique arrangement of four drawers and an additional 5th section under the lidded top.When this 5th drawer is removed it revealsa secret 6th drawer.There is a finger hole used to access this secret section (see picture 8). This type of tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables.

The lidded top section divides into three areas: a lift out pin cushion tray, and the far right was used to storea pop up \"third hand\" which was used to hold a piece of cloth so as to make use of both hands....Very unusual and convenient! Additionally, this lidded top box and the secret 6th drawer face are made of keyaki (zelkova) wood (see picture 9 & 10).

This haribako has a fine-grained mulberry burl top and front as well as keyaki (zelkova) wood sideswith kiri(paulownia) wood drawer interiors (see picture 7). This chest shows a high degree ofcraftsmanshipas it has been constructed with dovetail joints (see picture 12) as well as copper warabite (fern) drawer pulls (see picture 4). There is a side slot on the rear through which a special bamboo measuring devise would have been stored (see picture 11)(not included).

This chest has been well used yet well loved, with the exception of very minor scratches, this chest remains invery fine conditionthroughout.

All drawers run smoothly and the top lidded section swings open and closed with ease. Please enjoy viewing the enlarged photos of this chest before offerding. This chest measures 11 1/2\" wide by 9\" high by 6 3/4\" deep (29 x 23 x 17 cm).
