JAPANESE VINTAGE TOOL WOODEN SILK SPOOL:

This is a Japanese cryptomeria wooden spool known as anitomaki. Itomakiliterally means string winder or wrapper. It\'s like a large bobbin, a spool that is used in all sorts of weaving and sewing and other handicrafts. There is a central hole (see pictures) which can be fitted onto a shaft for easy revolving, unwinding or winding.
Thisitomakiis atleast 90 years old, although probably more, judging from the antique sale in Japan where it was acquired. They are interesting as stand alone art and can be used as stands for lots of things such as plants or bowls as it has a flat stable top in either position. Super cool, rustic, yet refined in a craftsman like way. It is made in an eight part construction which is all fitted together.
This itomaki measures 5 7/8\" high by 5 3/4\" wide (14.8 x 14.5 cm). Aside from a couple minor cracks that do not affect the sturdiness of this tool (see picture 5), along with a nice aged patina it remains infine condition.
Please note: the spool with the string wrap seen in the last picture is not included in this listing but is provided as an example of how this spool was once used when wrapped with silk.
