JERUSALEM TEMPLE INSCRIPTION
circa 9 BC
Biblical Period Reproduction

Stone relief, quartzite-limestone, 7.5 inches length (18 cm) x 5 inches width (12.5 cm), quarter inch thickness (10 mm), with inset hanging chain, back-label ID & translation.

Scale replica of the famous Temple Warning Inscription, also known as the Temple Balustrade Inscription, from the Second Temple in Jerusalem, discovered in 1871 by Charles Simon Clermont-Ganneau and presently kept at Istanbul Archaeology Museum.

When King Herod rebuilt the Jerusalem Temple between 19 and 9 B.C, he enclosed a large separated area called the Court of the Gentiles. Gentiles (non-Jews) were permitted to enter the courtyard but not the inner temple beyond. The king ordered warning signs in Greek and Latin be erected upon the partition walls giving strict warning that the penalty for such trespass would be death.

Josephus, the First Century AD Jewish historian, wrote about these Greek and Latin warning signs separating the Court of the Gentiles from the main Temple. Not until 1871 did archaeologists actually discover one. The size of the original artefact measures about 22 inches by 33 inches. Originally coloured with red ochre, each letter is nearly one and a half inches high.

THE TABLET BEARS THE FOLLOWING INSCRIPTION INSCRIBED IN KOINE GREEK:

\"No Foreigner May Enter Within The Balustrade Around The Sanctuary And Enclosure. Whoever Is Caught, On Himself Shall He Put Blame For The Death That Will Ensue.\"
