Charming late 19th century silverplated bowl made by the renowned silver plate company James W. Tufts of Boston Massachusetts. This wonderful little nut bowl stands on four highly detailed twig feet and features a leaf and twig handle. The bowl itself is in the form of a hatched bird’s egg. The finish on the silver is sort of a semi-gloss, not highly glossy but not a stippled matte “butler’s finish” either. The interior was originally parcel gilt, but hardly any of the gold remains. This piece has no monogram or inscription and stands 8” (20.3 cm) tall at the handle. It measures 6 1/4” (16 cm) long, leaf to leaf.
This sweet little basket is in fair to good condition, with a nice shine and no breaks or repairs. As mentioned above, very little of the parcel gilt interior remains. In addition, the inner floor has wear to the silver layer and some spotting and extremely tiny pits. The feet have been bumped or pushed upwards, which caused convex dents on the inner floor. There are scratches in the silver on the outer surfaces of the egg on both sides (see detail photos). On the lower side above two of the legs the silver has a faint striped “streakiness” to it which did not polish out.
