This antique pistol powder horn is made from acow, not from an endangered species. requires that I make thisstatement!This powder horn belonged to the Powell family of Jamestown &Williamsburg, Virginia from 1607 through the Revolutionary War Itis 9 7/16” long with a high domed wood base that has an iron staple in themiddle & has a 7/16” slot carved deeply into the top of the horn below thepouring spout.It has a great aged cream/white coloring for 2/3s & the top 1/3 isblack. It is in VERY well used condition & still shows the hand carving marks from when it was made & is without any cracks or rot Powell family powder horn history; Itwas first used by Jamestown first settlers Nathaniel Powell who is listed as a “Gentleman”& was an early planter & assistant to Blacksmith James Read.He was killed in the Massacre of1622 on March 22, 1622 defending the Read Smithy at the new “Jamestowne” villageon the main land east of the “James Forte” where several artisans had set uptheir businesses. It was then used during the Battle ofJamestown during the Bacon’s Rebellion on September 19, 1676 by Edward Powellwho fought in Virginia Governor Berkeley’s forces defending the capital. It was usedin the Revolutionary War by Sergeant Thomas Powell & his son after he waswounded at the Battle of Stony Point, New York, fought on July 16, 1779 Hisson Thomas junior then used it at the Battle of Yorktown in September &October, 1781 where he was also wounded on September 30, 1781. It was bought directlyfrom the Powell family in Williamsburg, Virginia by James Anderson& waspart of his high quality collection of Virginia artifacts.
