Below Is Her Obituary, Which Goes Into Great Detail About Who She Was As An Artist:Jane Mabry was an accomplished portrait artist and advocate for the arts, work that included being a founder and a past president of the New Mexico Arts Commission.
\"She was very highly regarded in the art community. Not just for her art, but her personality, for everything,\" said fellow artist and longtime friend Betty Sabo.
Mabry, a Roswell native who lived in Albuquerque for years, died Dec. 12. She was 95.
A private memorial service is being planned for January.
Mabry was honored in 1995 with a Lifetime Achievement Award from then-Gov. Gary Johnson. Three years ago, she received another lifetime achievement award during the four-art-society Masterworks of New Mexico exhibition in Albuquerque.
She recently gave Gov. Bill Richardson a painting she created that is to be displayed at the Barbara and Bill Richardson Pavilion at the University of New Mexico Children\'s Hospital. The pavilion is under construction.
After chatting with Richardson, she declared, \"He\'s the kind of guy you want to paint a portrait of,\" an October Journal story reads.
Then again, Mabry had been eying subjects and images to capture since she was a child.
\"She got her first inspiration from Santa Fe railroad calendars; started copying those,\" said her daughter, Gwenyth Mabry, an artist, too. \"It was just to me extraordinary that this girl from Roswell had the initiative to end up doing what she did.\"
Mabry started drawing seriously when she was in elementary school, probably as early as third grade. Gwenyth Mabry still keeps the drawing, of a blue jay perched on limb, for which her mother won a prize while in fifth grade.
After leaving Roswell, Mabry received an arts degree from UNM and then was a student-apprentice under Gerald Cassidy of the Santa Fe School.
From there, she ventured east, continuing her studies at the Art Students League in New York and then the Corchran School of Art in Washington, D.C.
While in the nation\'s capital, she painted works commissioned by the federal government under a Depression-era relief program— subjects that included sites such as Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park. The works were placed in federal offices across the country.
\"She did all these natural wonders,\" Gwenyth Mabry said. \"I have a great photograph of her as a young woman standing next to a great Grand Canyon painting.\"
She courted Scott H. Mabry, a fellow New Mexican who was studying law at George Washington University at the time, while in Washington. The couple married at the National Cathedral and returned to Albuquerque in the late 1930s.
It was after she returned that Mabry began painting portraits and American Indians as subject matter, the art for which she became widely known.
\"She was an ultrarealist,\" Gwenyth Mabry said, noting that she worked mainly in pastels and oils.
Sabo remembered how she, Mabry and Carol McIlroy, another artist, opened the Galleria del Sol in Albuquerque in the 1940s.
\"We were very successful,\" Sabo said. \"People on Sundays would say, \'Let\'s go down and see what the girls are doing down at the gallery in Old Town.\' \'\'
Mabry was a \"grand\" character, Sabo said.
\"She was always full of fun, and a wonderful artist.\"
Aside from her work on the New Mexico Arts Commission, Mabry also was on the committee that worked on the plans for the Botanic Garden, Gwenyth Mabry said.
Mabry stopped painting five or six years ago after she developed macular degeneration. She was urged to continue painting, maybe in a less realistic way.
But Mabry refused to abandon her signature style.
\"When she couldn\'t paint the way she wanted to paint, she wouldn\'t paint anymore,\" Gwenyth Mabry said.
Mabry was preceded in death by her husband, Scott, and a daughter, Pamela. She is survived by her son, Dr. John Mabry of Phoenix, and daughter, Frances Gwenyth Mabry and son-in-law, Djillali Benselka of Albuquerque; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.This Piece Is In Excellent Condition, With No Paint Loss, Tears, Scratches, Or Abrasions.
