Thisisa very special Japanesethree drawer (with liddedtop section),portable calligraphy tansumade ofkuri (chestnut)wood with sugi (cryptomeria) wood interiors. This chest shows a highdegree of Japanese craftsmanship in the joinery, being made with hardened hinoki pegged wood (see picture 9).

Theprotective iron metal on this chest as well as the single action lock with key (see pictures 5)date itto thelate Edo era (c. 1850). It also includes an opening used for dropping coins into the locked drawer (see picture 4). All drawer pulls,hinges, locksand latches are allmade of ironwith a protective coat of burnt lacquer. This small chest was used to hold calligraphy and writing materials as well as money and valuables.The lidded top sectionheld brushes (not included) and an ink stone (suzuri) (included, see picture 8).

This chest has been well used yet well loved and still has its original deep warm patina that only a century and a half of loving use could provide. The top carrying handle is still secure and provides a convenient way to transport this chest (see picture 3). The lidded top opens with a push of the top latch (see last two pictures) andseals shut with the same push of a button. The lock mechanism seen in picture 5 is still operable and locks with the provided key. Overall this chest remains in very fine original 1/4\"wideby 9 3/8\" high by 12 1/2\"deep(20.5 x24 x31.5 cm). A very warm accentfor your home or office. Great to hold pens as well as remote controls for the tv and stereo.
