This black lacquered kashizara(appetizerdish) was found in a Japanese kura(warehouse) which had items dating back over 300 years. It was made in the Edo period and is guaranteed to beover 180 years old.Japanese lacquer is considered the finest in the world. This kashizarais made of hand lathe turned cryptomeria wood. It has over 20 coats of film thin Japanese black lacquer with a final raised gold design. This piece features makie (raised gold lacquer) with a kingfisher? standing on a boatand riverscenic.

Kashizarawere usedas a dishto hold snacks ( especially cakes), or small appetizers. Having been in storage for over a century and a half this kashikozararemains infinecondition with only a few minor rim nicks (see enlarged pictures). It measures 6 1/2\" across by 1\" high (16.5 x 2.5 cm).
