JAPANESE HANGING SCROLL Antique \"Mt Fuji Landscape\"

by Yokoyama Seiki c.1840, Edo Period

This is a most elegant and venerable Japanese Hanging Scroll with a painting on paper by Yokoyama Seiki who was active in the early 1800\'s. He most likely made this painting around 1840. I believe the mounting is original to the painting. This scroll still has it original signed storage box.

Born in Kyoto in 1793, Yokoyama Seiki studiedunder Matsumura Keibun and followed the School of Shijo-ha. He was known as one of Big Four Artists of Kyoto along with Kishi Renzan, Shiokawa Bunrin & Nakajima Raisho.

His works were avidly collected during his lifetime and are in many collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, The British Museum, The Boston Museum of Fine arts and the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford.

The Shijo-haschool is named after the street in Kyotowhere many major artists were based; Shijoliterally translates to \"fourth avenue.\" Its primary patrons were rich merchants in and around Kyoto/Osaka and also appealed to the \'kamigata\' who were of the established aristocrat and artisan families of the Imperial capital during the late 1700 and 1800\'s.

Shijo-ha artists concentrated less on the exact depiction of its subject, but rather on expressing the \'inner spirit\'.

Seiki has given us a perfect Shijo-ha painting in this elegant representation of Mt Fuji viewed across one of the many lakes which surround it.

It is a beautifully balanced composition with two spits of land in the lower right with the barest indication of some sailing ships and the sacred peak in the upper left with the sun just breaking through. I particulate admire Seiki\'s use of the negative space between these two pictorial elements to represent both the water and the mists shrouding the base of Fuji-san. I believe that the light vertical marks on the right hand slope are meant to represent a small rain shower.

This is a most suggestive and poetical painting.

This scroll is not a large one, measuring 42 inches long and 26 inches wide, not including the roller ends which are of lacquered wood. There is no damage to the painting at all.

The old mounting shows a bit of wear and has a few expert repairs. It is made almost entirely of a golden tan raw silk. The two borders at the top and bottom of the painting are of a fine old brocade with a dull gold ground and large circular decorative motifs in metallic gold against a design of semi-circles in white. The entire scroll is edged with a quarter inch of gold brocade with chevrons. A most elegant touch.

The understated tones of the mounting are the perfect setting for the subtlety of the painting.

This scroll comes with itsoriginalsigned tomokako, or storage box. It is veryunusualfor a scroll of this age to still be united to its original tomobako. Besides being aconvenientandsafe place for storing thescrollwhennot on view, this tomobako adds considerable value to the scroll.

The photos give a very good idea of this wonderful hanging scroll with its painting on paper by Yokoyama Seiki from around 1840 in the Edo Period.

If you should have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact me.

And thanks for looking.

This scroll is around 174 or so years old and has passed through many difficult times including two World Wars, the Second of which was disastrous for its native country. For an unframed work on such a delicate support as paper, it is remarkable that it has survived at all, let alone in such good condition. But this scroll and similar works of art are not in absolutely perfect condition and they frequently show evidence of their long life. I endeavor to point out if and where there may be any damage, but the photographs tell the whole story. Please examine them carefully. If you are looking for something with absolutely no signs of age, I am afraid you will have to look elsewhere. In short, these beautiful scrolls were not born yesterday.

I indicate the artist\'s name based on a signature and seal and also the style, but occasionally a scroll may be a copy of a work by a famous painter. In the present case, I am sure the painting is by Yokoyama Seiki.

Due to the limitations of photography and the inevitable differences in monitor settings, the color of the pictures on your monitor may be slightly different from the scroll itself, but I did my best to capture it as it is. And, at least on my monitor, the color is a perfect match.
