Imari refers to the unmarked porcelain turned out by some 150 kilns in and around Arita, but more specialized kilns were operated by the Nebeshima and Hirado clans, and Sakaida Kakiemon (1596-1666). Nowadays, almost anything can be done with pigments, but in the early seventeenth century cobalt blue was the only color that could stand 1300 degree celcious (2370F) needed to fire porcelain.

Imari porcelain(伊万里焼) is the name for Japaneseporcelainwares made in the town ofArita, in the formerHizen Province, northwesternKyūshū. They were exported to Europe extensively from the port ofImari, Saga, between the second half of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century.

\"Imari\" was simply the trans-shipment port for Arita wares. It was thekilnsat Arita which formed the heart of the Japaneseporcelainindustry.

Arita\'s kilns were set up in the 17th century, whenkaolinwas discovered in 1616 by the immigrant Korean potter,Yi Sam-pyeong(1579–1655). (He may also be known by the name, \"Kanage Sambei\".) Yi Sam-Pyeong, along with his extended family of 180 persons, left Korea on the offer of a privileged position in Japan. This decision was made after the occurrence of certaininstances of Japanese violence. After Yi Sam-Pyeong\'s discovery, his kilns began to produce revised Korean-style blue and white porcelains, known as \"Shoki-Imari\".
