I just purchased this vintage Japanese studio pottery vase from a local estate here in Central Virginia. The vase is characteristic of the modernist Ikebana forms produced by a number of Japanese studios working during the 1950’s / 1960’s. This piece has a striking organic / abstract design with double cylindrical openings flanked by tapered wings / fins. The stoneware is finished in a white glaze with a burgundy / sang de boeuf wash with interesting texture over the surface finger ridges. The piece has a nice presence measuring 12” long, 6 ½” high and 2 5/8” deep. The base bears the pictured impressed character mark. The pot is in excellent condition with no damage or noted glaze wear. This strong free form design would make a great addition to any collection of vintage Japanese studio pottery or Mid Century / Eames Modern inspired décor.
