Like many working illustrators in the pre-internet age, Saunders was always on the look out for photograph and images to use as reference in the creation of his inventive narrative illustration paintings. In the 1930s, Saunders was working as a staff artist at Fawcett Publications in Minneapolis Minnesota. Fawcett put out a number of Hollywood fan magazines, such as Screen Secrets, Hollywood Magazine, and Motion Picture Magazine. Jack Gilrat Smalley & Rosco Kent Fawcett, editors of the publishing company, would give Saunders photographs which came into the offices for his personal use, and in later years upon his move to New York City to pursue his career as a freelance artist, he brought the photographs he had collected with him, and continued to use them as reference material for his illustrations during the rest of his professional career. The majority of these stills are from the pre-code era, and the collection includes everything from Edwin Bower Hesser nudes from Jean Harlow\'s notorious Griffith Park sitting to behind the scenes stills of Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. It is fascinating to see the collection as a whole, and to find examples where we can see how these images were transformed into illustration, and even occasionally see the trace of a finger print in paint along the margins. We are enthralled, and have included a couple of shots from the collection for reference. The below images are not included with sale.Paypal Buyers Are Invited To grapefruitmoongallery\'s Fresh sale Weekly Newsletter
