A very scarce black Americana collectible!
- This antique Punch and Judy puppet is a character from the famous puppet shows who is known as Jim Crow (or also “the black man”).
- Jim Crow puppet began to appear in the Punch and Judy shows around 1825 and has been seldom seen since 1942.
- He is often seen as a servant or sometimes a foreigner who was known for saying “Shallaballa”.
- This antique Black Americana puppet has a masterfully, carved, detailed, wooden head as well as wooden hands and feet.
- By the quality of the craftsmanship of this puppet I am lead to believe it is from the mid-19th century.
- Standing 17” in height this Punch and Judy puppet is also larger than the more common, contemporary sets of puppets that were produced later that century or the early 20th century.
