~ITEM DESCRIPTION~ Joan Crawford, academy-award winning actress, signed and sent this gracious thank-you letter to a friend who recently had sent her condolences for Joan\'s husband\'s death on April 19. The 6-1/4\" x 7\" note is hand-signed by Joan using her full name and is hand-typed on her printed stationery with her name printed at the top. This was Joan\'s 4th husband; they had been married 4 years.

This letter came from an Indiana estate sale, one of a group of letters Joan sent to Virginia, a friend of hers, over a period of at least 13 years. Joan was the ultimate actress, constantly responding to her friends and fans. Her letters do not follow a set pattern or script, often containing bits of information about what she is currently doing, suggesting each one was individually composed. All are typed, all are boldly signed by her; she has a very distinctive signature that is easy to authenticate. She may have typed these letters herself or at least personally dictated them to her secretary.

Joan\'s friend Virginia, the recipient of this letter, did work as a nanny and nurse in her younger years, and I suspect she may have worked for Joan when Joan\'s kids were small in the early 1940\'s. Virginia was living in Los Angeles at that time, but later moved to Indiana, living in Michigan City when this letter was mailed..

~CONDITION~ Very fine. Letter shows original single fold line to fit in a small envelope. Clean and undamaged. Envelope was opened rather roughly across the top and has a ragged tear. Joan\'s address is printed on the back flap of the envelope. There are markings on the front of the envelope by the post office- one is \"619\" which is probably for correcting the address which was typed as \"519\". Joan also misspelled Virginia\'s last name, the only time among the number of letters I have from this estate. I would guess Joan was still in shock from her husband\'s sudden death.
