John Henry Toney is one of the most admired self-taught \"Outsider\" artists, who at the age of 66 began creating his curious and unique drawings/paintings due to a personal inspiring event in his life. When John Henry was working in the cotton mill thirty or forty years ago, he drew a picture of his boss.According to John Henry, the boss fired him because he did not like the picture. With that discouragement, he quit drawing until, in 1994, while plowing a field he found a turnip that looked like it had a face and he drew it. \"That face in that turnip was a sign to me, “he says, \"and I knew the Lord wanted me to draw again.\" Since that life event, he has been creating his own unique style of raw intuitive rural art ever since. His style is profoundly amazing. His subject matter ranges from fancy ladies to automobiles, farm animals, trains, prehistoric creatures, alligators, the battle of the sexes, and turnips. John Henry works mainly with colored paint pens and markers, but also does some painted pieces on wood panels. He resides in Seale, Alabama. You will often see several numbers on his paintings and drawings, e.g., 73 and 2003. The first is his age when he completed the artwork; the second is the expiration date of his driver’s license at that time. The last is his old telephone number.
