John Sloan Gordon (Canadian,1868-1940) \"Nude Harem Girl\" Original Watercolor Painting John S. Gordon was born in Brantford, Ontario in 1868, but his parents soon moved the family to Hamilton. He had a love of drawing and went to work for the Howell Litho Company, where he learned the fundamentals of lithography. After some years, he became a free lance artist, doing advertising and illustration work. With the help of a wealthy relative, he travelled to Paris to study at the Académie Julian in 1895. When he returned to Canada he began to do illustration work for the Toronto Saturday Night magazine, the Globe and Canadian Magazine. Apart from his commercial work, he was an avid painter, strongly influenced the works of the impressionists, Le Sidaner and Monet. He was particularly attracted to pointillism of Seurat. In 1909, the National Gallery of Canada acquired one of his oil paintings, which exhibited the pointillist style which characterized his work. It is said that he was the first artist in Canada to adopt this painting technique. Gordon also admired the work of Tom Thomson, whom he sought out and visited several times in Algonquin Park.
He met his wife, Hortense, while teaching drawing at the Hamilton Art league, which he helped to organize. The pair travelled to Europe and for a tour of Art Galleries. Interested in Rembrandt and artists of the Flemish school, they visited the National Gallery in London and many galleries in the Hague. The Hamilton Art League eventually became the Hamilton School of Art, of which Gordon was appointed Head. He was known for his abilities as an art educator, and taught many artists, who went on to successful art careers. Well-known landscape artist, A.H. Robinson was a student, as well as Gordon\'s own wife, Hortense, who became a founding member of the \"Painters Eleven\". He passed away in Hamilton in 1940.
