In the year 1926 he participated in the first exhibition of the progressive Czech Photography Club, whose founding members included the well-known photographic artists Josef Sudek, Jaromir Funke and Adolf Schneeberger.JosefVětrovskýwas represented by his nude studies in Czech as well as foreign salons and was presented to the public with a one-person show in the fall of 1939. This is an unusual achievement, since individual retrospective exhibitions remained quite rare in the thirties. During the first year of the war, the gallery of the Czech Amateur Photography Club on Nekazanka street in Prague underwent repeated transformations. It was actually here thatVětrovskýgave definition to his work. He became a member of the club in 1932 and towards the end acted as its president (1940-1943). Afterwards, profesional demands required him to live outside of the capital. However, this unusually active man died of a heart attack. Further creative development was thus prevented, so that subsequently, it was necessary for this author to return to his earlier negatives .
Větrovský\'s approach to nudes is characterized by his respectful regard for the model. This has its origin in a humanistic approach to intimity, and his attempt to achieve through the medium of photography the traditional canons of second rate naturalistic painting and sculpture. JosefVětrovskýis the true student of František Drtikol (1883 - 1961). His education took place before the first half of the thirties in the Prague atelier of Drtikol. For this reason the requisites, stage props lighting and at times even faces familiar to us from the work of Drtikol appear. At timesVětrovský\'s dependence on his master is more obvious, at other times the assertion of subject predominantes, free of Drtikol\'s emphasis on the play of light and shadow and liberated from Drtikol\'s symbolism. In the most personal studies of JosefVětrovskýthe modern, dynamic composition isolates an expressive melancholy, as in a woman turned into herself with eyes closed. The pronounced silent passion of JosefVětrovskýassures him a noteworthy place in the history of photographic nudes.Text by Josef Moucha
