Klara Sever Signed Austin Modern Abstract Sculptural CChanukah/">Hannukah Menorah

This heavy modern piece is made from plaster treated to look like distressed metal (others suggest is looks like carved stone; it\'s certainly open to your interpretation) and is mounted a wooden base.

It is about14.4 inchestall (including wooden base) at the height of the tallest candle holderand15.5 wide at widest point. Made of patinated plaster in dark greys, silvers and brownsresembling distressed metal, each \"arm\" is capped with a .5 inch metal candle holder with matching patina. The candle holder will accomodate traditional CChanukah/">Hannukah candles or floral tapers.

This is a modern, unconventional hanukiah menorah (a conventional CChanukah/">Hannukah menorah would have all the candle holders at the same height with only the shamos candle holder higher than the rest) without a clearly defined or removable shamos.

The wooden base is painted black. It is 4 inches wide and 13 inches long and an inch high.

The bottom of the piece has an Austin Sculpture tag and four felt pads.

The piece is signed (back, bottom left) Austin Prod. Inc. and with the date of 1975 just above that, and the artist\'s name K. Sever to the right of that. (See our fourth photograph.)

Jewish artist Klara Sever is known for her sculptural designs, which are very collectible. You\'ll find an interesting interview with the artist where she discusses her family\'s experiences during the Holocaust here: style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\" class=MsoNormal align=left>It was hard to spot, but there are some damaged and repaired areas. On the back of the menorah (we\'re defining the back as the signed side) about 7 inches up on the back, there is an area which has been broken or chipped and repaired with paints (it camoFlaged well - we must have looked at this piece a dozen times before we noticed it.) The very top of that (5th from left) candle holder also appears to be chipped and touched up with silver paint. There is also some damaged to the circular element between the 5th and 6th candle holders, when viewed from the front, there appears to be a small chip missing from bottom, there are also some crack chips and what appears to be an 1.5 inch crack to the left of that. The sixth candle holder does not appear damaged, but does appear to have been touched up with paint. All of these damaged areas have been painted over to simulate the varying patina of the piece. On the far right of the front ofthe menorah there are several tiny chips.

This item has been used and there is wax on the candle holders and on the menorah.

There is some chipping of the black paint and some wax on the wooden base. The Austin Sculpture tag on thebottom of baseis torn and the felt pads are worn.

Most menorahs are made in Israel; this piece was made in the United States.

What do you see in this abstract piece? Do you see men holding up their arms in victory salutes? CChanukah/">Hannukah commemorates a military battle after all, not just an occassion to give and receive socks.
