Absolutely stunning and very tall and voluptuous, medium walled, abstract hand painted Tulipa Vase from the world acclaimed design artist Ulrica Hydman-Vallien, for the world renowned Kosta Boda factory, incolours ofemerald green, crimson, white, coral, black, flame, eucalyptus, veridian and fuscia red. Kosta was founded in 1742 by two Swedish army generals, Anders Koskull & Stael Von Holstein . They named the company after their joint letters Ko & Sta. The company was bought in 1746 by the Wickenburgs who expanded operations to Russia. Early productionincluded chandeliers, bottles for schnapps and beer and window glass for the royal palace in Stockholm. In 1828 cut glass was introduced whereby much of the glass wares were exported leading to them becoming Sweden\'s 2nd largest glass producer. Axel Hummel put the company finances in order & also introduced the railways to Kosta whereby in 1900 they hired a certain Gunnar Wenneburg to design a series for The Paris Exhibition of 1900. Alf Wallander was another notable design artist of the time, including Erik Skawonius, Tyra Lundgren and Edvin Ollers. Elis Bergh was art director from 1929 to 1950, whose post was taken up by a certain Vicke Lindstrand. Vicke had a genius for bold experimentation & innovative new ideas & hired Mona Morales-Schildt & others including Rolf Simmemark, Sigurd Persson and Anne & Goran Warff. This experience of hiring new young talent was repeated in the 70\'s welcoming Paul Hoff, Klas-Goran Tinback and Bengt Edenfalk and a certain Ulrica Hydman-Vallien. Ulrica joined the company in 1972 and has worked there ever since. Kosta, at this time produced art glass, bowls & tableware to great public acclaim. Through various alliances with Afors, Boda and Johansfors in the 60\'s & 70\'s - the group was renamed Kosta Boda in 1976. The company also went onto merge with Sweden\'s proprietory company, Orrefors - eventually becoming Orrefors Kosta Boda in 1990.

Ulrica Hydman-Vallien studied at the National College of Art, Craft & Design in Stockholm from 1958-61. In the early 1960\'s she extensively travelled through The States and Mexico and married Bertil Vallien in 1963. By 1964 she returned to Sweden and established her own studio at Afors. UHV has not only designed in glass and ceramics, but has also explored design in media such as textiles, paper, illustration and industrial design amongst many others. At Kosta Boda she worked extensively, but not exclusively, with hand painted decoration. Her compositions & designs are often characterised by human, animal or flower forms whose innovative studies extol her emotionally expressive and emotional attachment to these spheres. Her Caramba and Open Minds series of 1987 and her Tulipa range of 1992 have been especially well received and successful, amongst the general public and the so called\' glass hierarchy. The exquisitely talland very shapelyvase starts with a circular slightly sunken moulded base, from which the piece ascends to form a well proportioned, slightly bulbous lower region. The latter then starts to gentle recede and reduce in size and stature as it inwardly tapers just past the piece\'s waisted middle region. The piece then starts to splay outwards forming gently sloping arcs of a sublime, slight butdefinitive curvature. The piece has no discernable internal or external mouthrim which serves to retain its uncluttered clean lines. It must be said that the vase displays an almost feminine and very voluptuous curvature whose shapely contours are simply divine. The vase is decorated and indeed structured with a vast array of minute white splashes or streaks whose numbers a counted in the thousands. The latter deviates from being totally opaque in some areas.... to being quite loose and semi transparent in others. The vases hauntingly, almost ethereal shoals of minute white globules form a perfect almost painterley backdrop to Ulrica\'s hand painted Tulip studies whereby their collective massed ranks resemble a fine gauze or astretched wispy length ofcotton wool. Emanating fromthe vase\'s lower reachesappears hand painted enamels of an exquisite emerald and apple green. Theelegant painterley andpointed shapes form the tulips basal leaves. The sweeping brushstrokes in themselves form a sublime, finely veined appearance, whereby the leaves and the bloomssingular stem are highlighted by broad strokes of black enamel. Thestunning abstract green leaves are embellished withharmonisinglighter shades of eucalyptus greenand equally impressive darker tones of veridian and emerald green. The leaves culminate in an exquisitely large three petalled stylised tulip which gracefully sits proudly abovethepieces long and very elegantgreen leaves. The stylised crimson study of a three petalled Tulip towers above these leaves asits showy and very vibrant crimson redcolouration dominates the vase\'s upper reaches as it seemingly surveys the pieces very shapely and voluptuous lower contours. The crimson red tulips petals are heightened and accentuated by graceful brushstrokes ofa flame redcreate harmonising shades of fuscia and a deep coral pink. Ulrica\'shand signed script signature appears engraved in white set againstan apple green lower leaf background. The vase has a sublimely expressive and innovative and very femininebeauty, which characterises Ulrica\'s work and her influence on the world of art glass. The piece has immense vivacity and exhuberance, whereby the whole Tulipa series has been duly acclaimedby the Kosta Boda management, the glasshierachy and more importantly, by the general public, who have taken Ulrica Hydman-Vallien and her veryexpressive, individual and innovativepieces... to their hearts.
