L34 ANTIQUE STRASBOURG BY GORHAM STERLING SILVER SUGAR TONG 4 INCH
Item Description
We are pleased to offer this Antique c. 1897-1910 Sterling Silver Sugar Tong 4" in the pattern Strasbourg by Gorham. It is not monogrammed and is in excellent condition. The total weight is 23 grams. The Gorham Manufacturing Company was founded in 1831 by Jabez Gorham, a master craftsman together with Henry L. Webster at Providence, Rhode Island. In 1863, the firm was chartered by the Rhode Island Legislature as the Gorham Manufacturing Company. They later abandoned the coin silver standard (900/1000) and adopted the sterling standard of 925/1000 in the year 1868. During the heyday of American Silver manufacturing , circa 1850 to 1940, Gorham had a strong piece of the market. The White House used Gorham Silver Services for many of the administrations. Mrs Ulysses S Grant commissioned Gorham to make a Spectacular Sterling piece to commemorate the 100th Anniversary in 1957 and they produced a Century Vase that had over 2100 ounces of silver. Mary Todd Lincoln purchased an exquisite tea and flatware service for the White House in 1859....
