Staffordshire pottery is produced in the Midlands of England, with the heart of the traditional factories centered around six separate towns (Burslem, Fenton, Hanley, Longton, Stoke and Tunstall) which now comprise Stoke on Trent. The Staffordshire area came into world prominence in the latter 18th century, with the magnificent new contributions to the art form by Josiah Wedgwood (Wedgwood & Bently). Staffordshire was blessed with clay, lead, salt and coal which made it conducive for pottery production. By the time the Staffordshire region achieved the golden age of pottery production, the Victorian Era, there were reputedly between 1,000 and 1,500 potters of all various shapes & sizes that had either been, or were still in operation. Just a few of the venerable names are those of, Wedgwood, Spode, Minton, Aynsley, Doulton, and Twyford.
