Thislisting is fora circa 1890 French Sevres porcelain covered urn with fine gilt bronze mounts. The urn measures 32 ¾ inches or 83cm high to the top of the finial, and is 6 ½ inches or 16.5 cm at their widest.
This fine piece of Sevres porcelain is mounted in gilt gold bronze mounts with four lion’s paws on the base. The front of the covered vase is hand painted with the goddess Venus or Aphrodite riding the ocean waves on the back of a dolphin. Flying next to her are cherubs in her attendance as they approach the shore. The back of the vase has a woodland bubbling creek. Around these two hand-painted scenes are elaborate borders and vines with faux marble effects, luster-glazing, and raised heavy applied gold. The neck is decorated in a similar manor with a monochromatic portrait at the front and a cartouche at the back. The body of the vase fits on a large pin so it can rotate around for viewers. It is marked on the inside lid with the Sevres mark the letter “A”, and “FRANCE”.
The condition overall is very good; the edges of the lid have minor flakes on the edge, and there is minor age appropriate wear to the heavy applied gold. There is age appropriate darkening to the gilt gold patina. A very stately and showy French piece of porcelain.
